As a statement to affirm its support of racial equity and inclusion in graduate education at UNM, Graduate Studies announces a new initiative to offer five awards for eligible graduate students conducting research on topics related to what can be broadly called critical race scholarship, with priority given to studies that focus on race in the United States. Topics might include but are not limited to:
- Research on race relations in the United States
- Studies of slavery and its legacies
- Issues of social justice and racial equity
- Research on Black Lives Matter or related movements in past or recent present
- Literary, historical, archival, community, or artistic studies of black, indigenous, or Latinx expressive cultures, written or oral
- Critical race theories, pedagogies, and practices
- Critiques of historic, institutionalized, or structural forms of racism
- Urban design, public policy, or environmental racism
- Protest, activism, and social change
Graduate Studies stands united with the UNM community and the Council of Graduate Schools against racism and racial violence, and we seek to support graduate scholars whose work sets out to change the course of our racial histories for the better.
