The Gates Foundation award will provide $148,500 in funds to help graduate students from underrepresented groups enhance their methodological skills at the 2019 ICPSR Summer Program, with the aim of increasing the likelihood of their academic success as they pursue careers in the social and behavioral sciences.
The Summer Program’s Diversity Initiative was launched in early 2018 with support from the University of Michigan and the U-M Institute for Social Research. The Diversity Initiative originally sought to promote quantitative skills among incoming graduate students from underrepresented groups through scholarships to the Summer Program. In 2018, the Summer Program provided support for 15 students to attend one or both four-week sessions.
The Gates Foundation award allows the Summer Program to build upon these existing scholarships by supporting both incoming and continuing graduate students from underrepresented groups. In 2019, the Diversity Initiative will provide scholarships to 15 incoming and 15 continuing graduate students, as well as offer funds to cover their travel, lodging, and incidental expenses while attending the Summer Program.
